I never thought back on November 17th 1983,the day of my 30’th birthday when I first performed with the very first incarnation of the Professor World Band on the Green in my hometown of New Haven Connecticut that I would still be at it over forty years later. Yet here is a photo that some fans just sent me of the band in action in the Boston Public Gardens a couple of weeks ago.

From that fateful day the Professor World Band has continually progressed and evolved. Since the very beginning its been designed to be a Peace Wave Generator, attempting to achieve world peace through street music, because as Einstein once said,”Only those who attempt the absurd achieve the impossible.” We haven’t quite succeeded yet but we are having lots of fun trying and are determined to carry on. We’ve played in over 40 countries and made countless people stop and smile and even pick up a tambourine or a shaker or a hoola hoop and join the band. And forty years later are still going strong. And the world really needs peace waves these days!

Whenever it’s warm enough on weekends I’ll be out in the Boston Public Gardens playing with the Professor World Band. Labor day itself was a washout but we really needed the rain. Its been a hot and very dry summer.
Saturday and Sunday were pretty nice days, a bit on the hot side perhaps at times but the fan that I added to the Peace Wave Generator helps keep me cool.

I also added some blinking LED lights and a rotating motor on the antenna to help better distribute the Peace Waves. The world needs it more than ever these days.

In any case it’s been overall a good and encouraging summer for me. It’s good to be out there once again doing my thing and making people smile. People have been kind and appreciative and it’s clear they are happy to see me back once again.

I intend to go on playing in the Boston Public Gardens most good weather weekends straight through fall and hopefully through the Christmas season and New Year if it’s not too cold. Admittedly that’s a pretty big if.

I also plan to start work once again on a new more portable version of the Professor World Band however it remains to be seen if I will be playing in the Boston T this winter. I’m hoping that Covid will soon no longer pose a serious threat and I’ll feel comfortable playing in a more contained environment. Lets see what the futuristic brings. Whatever the case I hope to go on playing and generating Peace Waves as long as I am physically capable!

Professor World Bandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654643119776490113noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1333960705768087235.post-59807638516319302222021-11-09T06:41:00.002-08:002021-11-14T18:57:25.237-08:00Back in the Saddle Again!
After a prolonged absence due to the pandemic I am happy to be able to finally announce that the Professor World Band is once again performing in the Boston Public Gardens on weekends when the weather is amenable. Actually I’ve been back out there for the past couple of months now so I must apologise for taking so long to get around to updating my blog!

I have to say that it feels really good to be doing my thing once again after such a long break. And the response has been wonderful so far. I guess many people are thrilled to see live music and entertainment out on the streets once again.

But I also have a brand new show

and a completely new sound that I’ve been working on and practicing for many hours most every day for the past year or so. All that work and effort seems to finally paying off. One of the things that has kept me going for so long is that the Professor World Band is constantly evolving and hopefully improving steadily over the years.

I’m still taking precautions because the pandemic isn’t over yet. I probably won’t play indoors in the Boston T this winter and I no longer put instruments out for the kids to join the band. That’s one aspect of the show that I really miss. But they can still clap their hands and dance around and that they often do.

Last sunny Sunday in the Public Gardens two toddlers started moving and grooving to the beat and then a couple of kids joined in and then a bunch more and before you know it the whole audience was dancing to the sounds of the Professor World Band. That’s the kind of spontaneous joy that makes me feel that my job is important and worthwhile.

So once again, a big thank you to all the folks who’ve enjoyed my show and felt moved to put a little something in my tip bucket to keep the Professor World Band going and the peace wave generator spinning for 38 years as of next Wednesday, which also happens to be my 68’th Birthday! The first performance of the Professor World Band was on my 30th birthday in my hometown of New Haven Connecticut. We’ve been generating peace waves ever since and the world needs them more than ever now. See y’all next weekend in the Boston Public Gardens!

Professor World Bandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654643119776490113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1333960705768087235.post-66452091841810623842020-12-24T07:38:00.001-08:002020-12-24T07:38:27.991-08:00Looking forward to a better new year in 2021
Wow, what a crazy, mixed up, spooky year it’s been. I’ve been very lucky thus far. None of my close friends and family have been seriously ill with Covid and I’ve been very healthy as well. I have been spending my time at home practicing, writing and learning songs and working on my new music machine. I’m not abandoning my old machine but it is refreshing to have an alternative as well. Perhaps the new contraption is not yet as spectacular but it’s still developing. Once I get the opportunity to test it out in public more thoroughly I’m confident it will improve rapidly. That’s another reason to look forward to the coming season. Hopefully by then, with more and more people getting vaccinated, there will be an end to this crisis that we are in. The world needs Peace Waves more than ever now.https://www.facebook.com/100026352192473/posts/687208695500864/?d=n
Professor World Bandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654643119776490113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1333960705768087235.post-92144086275648981052020-04-17T11:42:00.002-07:002020-04-17T11:42:59.557-07:00My first social distancing gighttps://www.facebook.com/614823869/posts/10157249478643870/?d=nProfessor World Bandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654643119776490113noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1333960705768087235.post-43741237298497603902020-03-21T13:03:00.000-07:002020-03-21T14:57:07.228-07:00And Suddenly the Whole World Changed....I am still at a loss for words about the Covid19 virus. It will hurt a lot of people and cause untold suffering; an invisible enemy that physically isolates us from one another when comfort and working together is required.
Alas, at a difficult time, when so many are hurting and afraid, I have reluctantly decided to temporarily halt my street performances with the Professor World Band, hopefully not for too long. Our best defense against the virus seems to be social distancing and frequent hand washing and decontamination of exposed surfaces.
If everyone cooperates we can flatten the curve and keep our health infrastructure from collapsing.
Eventually it will pass but it's too early to say how soon. In the meantime I will work on perfecting the Professor World Band and maybe writing some new songs and perhaps posting them online.
I will sorely miss the street performing.Aside from being my only source of income it also keeps me happy and physically fit. I put my heart and soul into it and I've been doing mostly that for over forty years now. I'm hoping that it wont be too long before I am out there once again playing music on the corner. When this is winding down, people are really going to be needing something to make them smile. Wether that's in a month or more than a year from now, the Professor World Band will be ready. A big part of my job is giving hope to people. This will eventually pass and we will hopefully be stronger and wiser for it. Perhaps people will wake up and start taking better care of the Earth?
Peace Waves,
To celebrate the occasion a senior member of both SAW, Skeletons Against War and PFWP, Pumpkins for World Peace are joining the band for the run up to the holiday. it's a pretty scary world out there and we need to generate all the Peace Waves we possibly can.
I'm sorry to say that due to some technical difficulties that this blog went down for a while and when it came back up it seems that a couple of my latest updates seem to have been irrevocably lost in cyberspace. So it goes.

It's been a pretty good year so far though for the Professor World Band with several new additions and upgrades. I will continue on playing weekends in the Boston Public Gardens until it gets too cold for my audience to stand and watch. Hopefully there will be a few more warm weekends before Christmas and the New Year. After that I will carry on playing and singing in the Boston T with Digger the Dancing Dog and the mini Peace Wave Generator.

It may be getting cold outside but over the winter the Professor World Band is still ready to go and available for parties and festivals.

Perhaps I should have stayed a bit longer. There is still plenty of snow here in Western Massachusetts.
Mexico was an absolute gas. I flew to Cancun to have some dental work done at less than half the cost that it would have been here. The clinic did an excellent job and since everything is so inexpensive there I more then saved the cost of the trip while tanking up on sunshine while I was there. I managed to find a room in the center of town for only $250 for the whole 16 days of my stay. It wasn’t a luxury suite but it was plenty fine for me. And the food was delicious and so affordable.
While I was there I also did some busking. I brought Digger my dancing doggie and a whole pack of smaller hounds with me. We entertained people in the nearby Palapas park and Mercado 28; both places I had played at with my Hang drum when I visited ten years ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that some of the market people recognized and remembered me from back then! Here’s a photo of Digger and I playing at the beach on Isle Mujeres. In the photo below taken in Mercado 28 I am playing with my band.
So I wrote this song and recorded it in the basement. If they were like it you may see the Professor World Band on your TV screen next year sometime.
This Coming Saturday, November 17'th, marks the thirty fifth birthday of the Professor World Band! Since it all started officially on my 30'th birthday, this Saturday will also be my 65'th birthday! That's quite a milestone and both the Professor World Band and Ramblin' Dan are still going strong. To celebrate I hope to be playing in the Boston Public Gardens if the sun is shining and it's warm enough. Come on down and join the band and help us make some peace waves on this special day! If the weather is wet and cold we will be playing somewhere in the T, probably somewhere on the Red Line.
Well, it's summer time again and the Professor World Band is still going strong. A lot has happened in my life since I last logged in here. I was in Athol all winter fixing up a house. A month ago I moved back to Shelburne Falls in western Massachusetts. I'm setting up my studio and workshop in the basement again and looking forward to doing a lot of practicing and tinkering there during the week. Most weekends I still make it to Boston to play in the public gardens. It's been going quite well for me. I guess folk really appreciate it because the world really needs lots of peace waves these days. So I figure I'll just keep on keeping on for as long as I'm able. I've been adding lots of songs to my repertoire and lots of crazy new dodads and thingamagigs and drums and sounds to the professor world band. One fun new innovation has been that I am experimenting with adding blocks under the wheels of the rotating stage so that the whole contraption now is like a giant rocking chair that rocks back-and-forth to the beat as I play it. It is effortless and so much fun and helps me get into the beat and looks really crazy.lI plan on making some new videos very soon to post here . In the meantime, here's a blast from the past that someone just recently sent to me. It's from an interview done almost 20 years ago for Israeli television that was made on my trip through the middle east in the year 1999. I looked a bit younger back then!

And here I am playing in one of my new favorite spots to play on Revere beach last weekend. They have these pavilions there that provide lots of shade. There's almost always a nice breeze and I get a great view of the beach as I go round and round on my rotating stage. I even managed to get in a quick dip in the ocean between sets! I was lucky and showed up there just in time for their annual sand sculpture Festival which brings thousands upon thousands of visitors. I was just getting ready to set up when a policeman approached and asked me for my permit. Luckily I was able to convince him that I was harming nobody and that my show would add a lot to the festivities. And indeed it did. I attracted large enthusiastic audiences and had some of the world's cutest kids come up and join my band.

I've been taking advantage of the warm weather to travel around a bit and explore new places to play. Lately I played in Brattleborough Vt., Lake George, Saratoga Springs NY, Hampton Beach NH and Newburport. It's fun being on the road again. It reminds me of my good old days traveling all over Europe and finding new places to play and beautiful spots to park for the night. After living on the road for 30 years or so I do miss sleeping in my truck sometimes.
Thus far it's been a very successful tour. I've always been able to find a spot to play and several times have managed to convince the authorities to let me proceed when they have been of mind to stop me. I will probably go back to Newburyport this weekend as they are having their annual Yankee Doodle Day festival. Here I am playing in Saratoga Springs. I managed to find a spot to play right by my parking place on the main street. That was convenient. The local TV station even came out to film a song for their intro to the evening news. I may go back there again next month as it's there horse racing season and the town will be packed. I'll keep you posted!
Here is a link to another documentary made a few months ago by another local film student. I've been meaning to post it for a while but haven't gotten around to it till now. I really like this one because Warren took the trouble to search the internet for old clips of the Professor World Band and integrate them into one short film. I hope you enjoy it!

As a one man band traveling from
country to country and town to town all over Europe for twenty years in a rusty
old camper van I had many a second chance. One particular one that comes to
mind was back in 2005 when the Swiss police were going to confiscate my old
1978 Mercedes truck from me and compress it into a bale of iron and aluminum
for recycling. I would also get to pay several hundred dollars in fines and
fees to cover the costs.

I had been living in Big Baby(so
named for the double Bs in the license number) for almost 18 years at the time
and it was my home, full of all my worldly treasures and possessions. It was a
wonderful truck which I bought in Holland from an old man who used it to sell
“Ouldie Bouliches” a delicious Dutch pastry much like our beloved donuts. I had
outfitted it with a bathroom, kitchen, dining room and bedroom as well as a
corner to practice my one man band. It also had a fold up stage for me to
perform on the side and an amazing terrace on the roof from which I enjoyed
many a scenic view. It was an awesome truck but alas it was old and did not
comply with the all the Swiss very strict regulations upon motor vehicles.

The police came knocking one day while I was parked in a
beautiful spot one of Switzerlands many clear blue lakes. They had me follow
them to an inspection station where my truck was deemed unworthy of Swiss
roads.

The police were polite and civil enough. They gave me almost
a week to empty my truck out. They had me park it on the parking lot of an
unused railroad station in the nearby town of Solothurn. They took my plates
and instructed me not to drive but I would be allowed to live in it while I
figured out what to do with all my belongings.

I had no idea what to do though. I couldn’t legally buy
another vehicle in Switzerland and even if I could rent a vehicle to salvage my
one man band and all my possessions I really had no idea where to store them. I
was really freaked out by this but luckily I was travelling with my faithful
companion Jolly Olly, the always happy and friendly Swiss Appenzeller dog who
helped keep me from total break down and despair.

As luck would have it, Olly struck up a friendship with a
dog that lived in a house that bordered on the station parking lot. I got to
conversing with his owner and of course told him all about my situation.

I had pretty much decided that I had not much other choice
but to fill a backpack with a few carefully chosen things and find a friend who
might let me and Olly stay for a while until I figured out what my next step
would be. What made me saddest was that this could well have been the end of
the Professor World Show, the one man band performance of mine that had made
millions of people smile in so many countries for the past couple of decades.
The crazy contraption that I built had grown into a giant music machine too big
to schlepp around without a good sized truck. It would have to stay behind but
I wanted to make one last show with it before it got squashed along with Big
Baby.

The neighbor that I had been pouring my heart out to about
all this was very sympathetic. He suggested that I could make a show right
there on the empty parking lot to which I had been confined by the police. He would bring all his neighbors and there
was a home for handicapped children right nearby which could bring all their
kids.

And so it came to pass. What could
well have been the very last Professor World Show took place in the empty
parking lot of that abandoned railroad station the following Sunday afternoon.
It was a wonderful show as well. The weather was warm and sunny . A good crowd
of locals showed up as well as a dozen children from the nearby home for the
handicapped. Everyone had a great time and when the hat was passed around for
me the audience was more generous than I had ever dreamed possible.

But the
next day the police were scheduled to stop by and tow my truck to the wreckers.
I was very sad but not for long. Some of the neighbors who were at the show
interceded on my behalf and the police changed their minds. The next day they
informed me that if I were to fix a couple of things with the steering and weld
a few spots on the frame I would have another chance to take it through the
inspection!

I couldn’t
believe my luck but it gets even better. I went looking for a mechanic right
away and found a nearby garage and explained my situation to the owner. He took
an immediate liking to me and Olly and offered his assistance. I would help out
with the work and the only thing he would charge me was for the replacement parts. We set to work right away and with his
unwavering assistance we soon got it through the inspection.

Almost
miraculously the Professor World Band was back on the road making people smile
once again!
Moral of the story; Never lose hope. It ain't over til it's over!

Here's a couple of photos of Olly, my possibly last ever Professor World Show and the mechanic who helped me get Big Baby through inspection.
Wow 2017 is almost here. Another year has gone by and what a crazy year it's been! Now more than ever the Professor World Band will be in demand to generate the Peace Waves that are so desperately needed. While there is still music there is always hope!

The big news for me since my last posting is that I've moved from the Cambridge Coop where I was lucky to live for the past eight years to a little red ranch house on the edge of a small town in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. At this point it is uncertain if this move is only temporary or permanent. It sure is lovely out here though and peaceful. I've got deer and bear and fox and all kinds of critters right in my backyard.

Best of all though, I have my very own awesome basement workshop and practice room where I can make as much sound and music as I like whenever I feel like it. I've been doing a lot of practicing and I'm looking forward to doing lots more throughout the winter here and improving my show.
One of the first things I've been working on here in my basement is a brand new portable one man band. It is still fairly early in the developmental stage but I took it out for a test run in the Harvard T station a couple of weeks ago and I was quite pleased with the results. I am thinking about taking a trip with it to somewhere warm this winter.

Playing with my new portable one man band in the Harvard T station

It is a two hour drive from my new house to Boston though and not too many places to busk nearby. I often drive in to play and stay weekends in my van but will probably not do that so often after New Years until it starts warming up again. I'm expecting a pretty tough winter as we've already gotten a fair amount of snow. I am working on finding more gigs and places to play out in Western Mass. I played at the Asheville Fall Festival a couple of months back and that was fun. Last week I did a Channuka gig at Temple Israel in Greenfield that also went well. Let me know if anyones got any good ideas for me. I've been giving out my publicity at schools but haven't heard back from any yet.

I'm also working on my very own documentary film with the help of Greenfield Public TV. They leant me a camera to film and now they are teaching me to edit in their studio. It will hopefully be finished soon and then it will be aired on local TV and posted on the internet. I will post a link to it here on my site when it is ready.

That's about all my news that's fit to print for the moment. Here is one last photo of me playing in the Public Gardens in October with a couple of French horn players from a local music school. I thought we sounded really good together.
Here are a couple of photos from my last gig. It was on the top floor of an M.I.T. dormitory building. I believe it was the 27'th floor. It houses over 2000 people, some of them married couples with children. In any case the view of Boston and Cambridge was pretty amazing. Perhaps the Peace Wave Generator broadcasts better from such a high altitude because the gig went really well as can be seen in the photo here, everybody there joined the band and helped me keep the beat.

I've got a couple more gigs coming up that I'm pretty excited about. There's a Children's Art festival in Haverhill coming up on Saturday June 4th. That's thanks to Elaine Barker who saw me playing in the Public Gardens last weekend.

Then there's the Howland street block party on June 18th in the Cambridge neighborhood that I live in. That's always a fun event that I've played at for the past five or six years.

And then on July 23rd I'll be playing at the Boston Children's Museum at a Maker fair they are organizing. I'm really excited to be playing there so come on down and bring the family and friends to see the Professor World Band in action. I am scheduled to be playing there from 11:00 to 12.00 and then again from 1:00 to 2:00.

If you know anyone who needs a really unique and crazy one man band to entertain guests at their special event just have them contact the Professor World Band right here through this website! My dream is to someday play together with the Muppets on Sesame Street so if you run into Kermit or Miss Piggy or Big Bird or any of those guys, please feel free to put in a good word for me!Professor World Bandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654643119776490113noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1333960705768087235.post-40874753488092880512015-12-24T14:29:00.001-08:002015-12-24T14:30:13.577-08:00Happy Holidays One and All and many thanks for your continuing support which keeps me doing what I love to do best of all; making you smile!
I also have been working on a rotating platform for it which is pretty awesome. I had a rotating stage years ago when I was traveling around Europe but this newer version is much easier to set up and transport and it needs no motor to keep it going around. It's a real attention getter and people have been very excited about it. I'm hoping for a good season playing in the Public Gardens and Harvard Square. When it starts getting hot perhaps I'll take a trip up to Canada this year.
You can see the rotating stage in the developmental phase in this recently made documentary made by Harvard student, Michael Genecin for a class.
https://vimeo.com/127546125

Now I have also mounted wheels underneath it so if I want I can set the whole thing up at my house and wheel it about a mile down to Harvard Square to play. It's a lot of fun playing on it, although I do tend to get a bit dizzy at times.Professor World Bandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654643119776490113noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1333960705768087235.post-42998429276882946262015-03-16T12:50:00.000-07:002015-03-17T13:06:48.805-07:00Back in Boston!Just a quick update now to let you know that I had a very successful and fun trip to Guatemala and I am now back in town and working on a brand new Peace Wave Generating contraption. I've tested in out already once in the T and once in the Public Gardens and it is sure to be a whole lot of fun to play. I am looking forward to the coming spring!

I hear tell that I missed out on a lot of snow while I was away. My friends sent me incredible photos and I'll have to say that it all looked very pretty from where I was sitting and soaking up the sun in Guatemala the whole time. I think it only rained once for less than an hour the whole time I was there. The day I arrived in Antigua though it did snow volcanic ash all over town from an eruption on nearby Fuego volcano. I had an excellent view of all the eruptions from the roof of my hotel there. It really was very impressive and inspiring. I wrote several songs while I was there which I hope to post soon in future blogs.

I had a lot of fun playing in the Central Plaza of Antigua. My traveling version of the Professor World Band attracted lots of attention and created a lot of joy and laughter. I only really played a few times but it was worth to me all the trouble of bringing all my gear with me just to see all those curious and happy faces crowding around to see my show.

I didn't mention in my last update that one important reason for my trip was to get my teeth fixed at a fraction of the cost of what I would have had to pay here. Although I was a bit nervous about trusting my teeth to an unknown dentist, she was highly recommended by a friend and she did an excellent job.
So not only did I have an excellent vacation and escape the Boston winter but I also saved about five thousand dollars by going there! Lucky me. I feel all charged up and ready to go as soon as the spring time finally hits here.

Here's one of the songs I wrote while sitting on the roof of Capitan Tom Hostel in Antigua while watching the Fuego volcano blow off steam.

I'll sing you a little song about an amazing trip I took,
Down to Guatemala just to have a little look.
My dentist had just quoted me 10,000 for a bridge
I didn't have that kind of dough a laying round the fridge.

My friend Ricardo says to me, Go down to Guaté town,
I know a real good dentist there, she makes amazing crowns.
It only costs a fraction of what it does right here
So I flew on down to Guaté town in the winter of the year.

It snowed and snowed in Boston almost every single day
But I was down in Guatemala so very far away
Sitting on my hotel roof and soaking up the sun
Meeting lots of travelers and having lots of fun

Surrounded by volcanoes spewing ash and steam
It was really amazing like in some crazy dream.
Delicious fruits and vegetables that grow the whole year long
And lots of friendly people who inspired this here song

I even brought along with me my crazy one man band
I played out in the central square and it was really grand.
Lots of people gathered round to cheer the loco gringo boy
The was a lot of laughter and the air was filled with joy!

The dentist did a real fine job I am happy for to say
My smile is so much brighter now in oh so many ways.
I saved a lot of do-re-mi and had a real great trip
So go down to Guatemala if you want a real hot tip!
I've started to play in the T with a new suitcase version of the Professor World Band. It's still in the developmental stages but I've been having a lot of success with it and making lots of people smile. I'm going to road test it this February and fly with it to Guatemala for a month. Last time I was there was in February of 1980! Coming up on 35 years ago!
I have some great stories to tell about that trip. I was hitching across from Belise to Mexico because I ran out of money. I started busking with my mandolin to make some money for food and lodging. I was quite an attraction as a light skinned redhead with long hair and a beard in a beat up old cowboy hat. I had big crowds of people who gathered as I belted out Beatle songs that everybody knows. I earned enough to stay in cheap hostels and food was very inexpensive. I made an effort to learn Spanish and carried my dictionary and vocabulary notebook with me everywhere. After a month or so I could have some interesting conversations with people. I still remember playing in Antigua on the crafts market and I look forward to playing there once again on this coming trip. Not for the money this time but just for old times sake and spread the message of the Professor World Band.
The police used to stand around and watch sometimes with big submachine guns and very macho looking scowls on their faces. They never really bothered me but they did make me a little nervous. I kept thinking better not hit any sour notes or it could be your last! My friend Ricardo who lives with me in the coop is a street musician from Guatemala. He tells me that it is legal there now. I do remember eventually getting stopped from playing in Guatemala city and told to go back home because I didn't have any money. I hitched on up through Mexico back to Austin Texas where I was living in a coop. What an amazing trip that was! My guardian angels must have been looking after me to make sure that I was safe.
I remember Guatemala as a beautiful country . I know that times are pretty tough for many people there and there is crime and poverty. I will be careful but I also hope to arrange to play in schools while I'm there. Where there is joy there is hope and that's what it's all about. That, and not to mention getting away from the cold Boston winter.
So I hope my next update will be about the wonderful time I had with the Professor World Band in Guatemala and hopefully I will be able to post some photos of us performing at the market in Antigua and also at a school or two. here are a couple of pictures of the new suitcase version of the Peace Wave Generator that he took in South Station last week. Thanks to Nda-jiya Suberu for sending these.
